About the event
Simon Spelthann and Michael Steinke from Leibniz University Hannover, members of our reaCtor project, have organized a symposium on „Lasers and Photonic Technologies for Environmental Challenges“ at the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft e. V. (DPG) Conference in Greifswald on 27th february 2024. Amidst the discussions on groundbreaking advancements in laser-based micro-/nanostructuring, photonic measurement technology for environmental challenges as well as photonics-assisted green energy production, Ryszard Buczynski and Devin O’Neill presented novel optical fibres by 3D-printed preforms and first results from our EU pathfinder project reaCtor.
The symposium sparked dynamic conversations on the role of photonics in addressing pressing environmental issues. From CO2 reduction, detection of pollutants to sustainable and efficient energy solutions - the potential impact is profound!
Another highlight of our visit was an impressive tour at the MPI for Plasma Physics, where we got an up-close look at the Wendelstein 7-X nuclear fusion research facility. In terms of dimensions, this reactor is on the opposite end compared to our miniaturized fibre reactor. Wendelstein 7-X’s scale is simply mind blowing – and a testament to the boundless ambition to solve environmental challenges by scientific exploration.
